Around SBN: The Worst Season of Francisco Rodriguez's Career Bar-right-arrows

Geathers signs monster extension -- Smith next?

On Wednesday, Robert-dont-call-me-Jumpy-Geathers signed a monster deal for, what I believe, is a very limited sample size. Having completed his third season, Geathers has recorded 17 career sacks -- including 10.5 sacks in the most recent.

Willie Anderson gave Geathers a tremendous vote of confidence.

"Here’s a guy you never know he’s around until he goes out and gets two sacks on Sunday," Anderson said. "A great character guy. It’s a great thing to get not only those young fresh legs, but a guy with a veteran mind. I’m happy for Robert because he’s a solid guy who has worked for it."

The Bengals are making an effort to sign Justin Smith as, what appears to be, the final large pay free agent signing.

Are the Bengals spending too much? Is re-signing Justin Smith a good move?

I wish Justin got more sacks...
but, he sure does do a lot from the DE position. I wonder how many QB pressures he has.

I don't like the idea of osing Steinbach, even if Whitworth is a suitable replacement.

Geoff Hobson made an interesting point. He thinks it might be time to get annother RB. He pointed out that Rudi hasn't had a run longer than 40 in a long time (years, I don't remember the length). If we replaced Rudi, I wonder if that would free money up to resign Steinbach before he signs with another team.

RE: Rudi
I missed the Hobson point. But I have to soooooo disagree. He hasn't had a run longer than 40 since November 28, 2004 (52 against Cleveland). However, he's owns the top two single-season rushing seasons (2004, 2005). He's scored 12 rushing touchdowns in each of the past three seasons. In each of the past three seasons, Rudi averages 4.562 first downs a game (LT, in the past three seasons, averages 4.583 first downs a game). And let's not forget; it was very hard for this offensive line to start each game together. There were so many different lineup changes at the offensive line. Now, if the question were about Chris Perry, 100% agree.

i sort of agree about rudi
clearly he's not a threat to do a home run play, but he doesn't have to be to fulfill his role. The problem is the bengals need to find that kind of back not to replace rudi, but to work on other downs. Perry is possible, Watson dunno, but in any case the Bengals definitely should at least draft a RB as backup.

Agreed
And it's not that I don't think Perry could do it. But for pete's sake, we can't depend on the guy to play a 16-game season. Is it his fault? Of course not. But we're not worried about fault, just dependability.
