Bengals trade for Shaun Rogers

I'm like every other Bengals fan out there. I don't expect much, but I complain when nothing happens. ESPN is reporting (through PFT) that the Bengals have traded their third and fifth round picks for Detroit Lions big-man, Shaun Rogers. Rogers has been in nearly every trade rumor -- none with the Bengals. At 3:50pm, Bengals.com picked up the story.

An NFL source confirmed Friday the Bengals have swung one of their biggest deals in history by acquiring Lions defensive tackle Shaun Rogers for third- and fifth-round picks.

It would seem likely that the Bengals will work on a contract extension. Rogers signed a six-year deal worth $43 million after the 2004 season. His base salary in 2008 is worth $4.25 million with $5.25 million in 2009 and $7 million for 2010 -- his signing bonus went for $15 million.

In 2006, Rogers was suspended four games for violating the steroid and related substances policy. Rogers claimed it was an appetite suppressant containing a form of ephedrine which is banned by the league.

One has to wonder if this ends John Thornton's Cincinnati career.

Sean (Detroit Lions blogger, not Rogers) doesn't seem pleased.

I said it before...
...I'll say it again:

Astounding.

Whether it works out or not, this was a great move. For once the Bengals' FO is at least trying.

If they go on to sign Antwan Odom I may fall over dead from shock.

What do you know!
My little tirade about not swinging a Kris Jenkins like deal was answered.  Who Dey!  I have not said that or typed that in quite some time.

I second the Antwan Odom comment.

Filling needs before the draft...it's fantastic.

Interesting move
Maybe this coaching change thing has lit a fire under the Bengals front office.  Looks like 3-4 defense here we come.

I agree with above--this totally changes the draft picture. The Bengals no longer have to take a DL with the first pick.  But we also give up two picks--which means we better pick smart.

Still have a third?
From Hobson's article, it sounds like we'll still retain a third round pick though as compensation for losing Steinbach (as well as some picks in the later rounds).  This is a great move.  I just hope it works so Mr. Brown will not be so gunshy to complete similar transactions in the future.

I... I...
am shocked! Yeah, now we don't have to worry about DL for the draft.

I was thinking today that franchising Andrews took even more money from the D. This helps. I'd say JT is gone. Having Peko and resigning Fanene.

crazy
Now its being reported that Rogers is going to the Browns for Bodden and a 3rd round pick.

Screwed by the Chancellor
Roger Goodell = piece of crap.

Hooked on Mathematics
The NFL voided the trade because Rogers bonus would be retro to the new team and since the Bengals don't have any cap room--and guess what?

How is it that the Bengals don't know their cap space? Nice work front office.

by goffchile on Mar 1, 2008 2:30 AM EST   0 recs

Cap space can not be the issue
The Bengals have $30 million in cap space. Even cutting out cash for Andrews and Dhani and the rookie pool and injury cushion and all that, they still have ~$12 million. Rogers had a ONE million dollar bonus due today.

This whole deal stinks to high heaven -- and the stench is coming from the NFL front office, not PBS. It looks to me like the Bengals and Lions had a deal, then Detroit got a better offer from Cleveland. The Browns and Lions then got on the horn to the league office -- where we have such a fan in the High Lord Chancellor -- and got them to drum up some excuse for voiding the original deal.

Bottom line, the Bengals appear to have gotten royally screwed.

It was to count retro
From what I understand, Detroit wanted, as part of the trade, for the acquiring team to take the cap hit--since the Bengals don't have cap space on last years cap (not this years) the deal fell through.

Yeah, I have heard that theory...
...and it sounds reasonable -- except that the $1 million roster bonus was due today, which is the second day of the 2008 league year. How was or could a roster bonus to be paid in the 2008 league year, be applied to the 2007 cap?

Ditto
We could afford it just fine -- why I think the trade was made.
