Second round pick coming in SB Nation draft

While news has been dreadfully slow, and we've discussed most of the team's position needs for the draft, believe it or not, we're still around. Pumped for the draft, are we? First things first, we have a second round in the Sports Blog Nation Mock Draft picking #46.

I'm thinking Wide Receiver. DeSean Jackson went to Tampa Bay (#20) and Devin Thomas to St. Louis (#33). That leaves Malcolm Kelly, Limas Sweed, Mario Manningham and James Hardy.

Thoughts?

I'm high on Hardy
He did have a domestic violence incident back in 06, tho, so they may steer clear of him. Still, nothing since and the Bengals were at IU checking him out. Some think he's still raw but he appears to me to be a quick study, definitely has the potential to be a No. 1 eventually and could replace Henry right away.

Psst...
I took Malcolm Kelly at #11.  Not proud of it...

Well, heck
I scanned the left side for "WR" and totally missed them.

Red Bryant?
I'd still go defense. I think you can pick up a decent WR later.  Red Bryant? Patrick Lee? Lawrence Jackson?

If I went offense, I'd think running back. Chris Johnson or Kevin Smith.

Jackson
DeSean Jackson is 5-9 and there really aren't many terrific receivers below 5-10.  Steve Smith is the exception and not the rule.

I'd rather have Jordy Nelson (Kansas St.) or James Hardy (IND).  Although with Hardy's domestic violence charge, we might want to steer clear of him.  I'd like to avoid any more crazy in our WR corps.  Do people think Hardy can be as good as Plaxico or is there no chance of that?

Some other good players options at other positions (not WR) are:

DT (if we don't get Ellis) - Pat Sims, Trevor Laws,
OT - Sam Baker, Anthony Collins, Carl Nicks
OLB - Xavier Adibi, Erin Henderson

Manningham
C'mon.  We just can't.

by mp45242 on Apr 15, 2008 1:36 PM EDT reply actions

We won't
If I have any say, we're having a Wolverine-less draft.

by Josh Kirkendall on Apr 15, 2008 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

WR
Alright. Here's the choices, Hardy, Manningham or Nelson.

However, I think goff could be onto something also. Just doesn't seem like a deep pool of WR we need to worry about in the second.

Would you guys prefer another position?

by Josh Kirkendall on Apr 15, 2008 2:33 PM EDT reply actions

For Manningham...
I was talking about his character flaws rather than his Michigan roots.  I'm not a Michigan fan but thought Leon Hall was fine last year (although I wanted Reggie Nelson at the time).

Anyway...in round 1, I think we have to take the best player available between Dorsey, Ellis, Gholston, Rivers and Harvey (I think that's the order that we'd want them).  Then, if we don't get a D. Tackle in round 1, we should draft one in Round 2.  If we do get a D. Tackle in round 1, we should take the best player available at LB, DE, WR and maybe OT.

Chris Johnson...
fills a need both to provide a change of pace with Rudi and as a receiver out of the backfield who could actually go deep from a split out position- as well as return the hell out of kicks.

Otherwise, though it's early for him, I like Dexter Jackson, a smallish, lightning fast receiver out of App. State- with the added bonus that he torched the Michigan secondary twice for scores last September. Manningham's running mate, Adrian Arrington might not be a bad get.

Still, a LB- even if we get Ellis(and please god, let us get Ellis) might actually be the wise choice. Curtis Lofton, Jerod Mayo, Xavier Adibi, or Erin Henderson- in that order should the first two fall that far. I've heard too much about Bryant taking plays off to want to go second round on him. Quentin Groves, should he be available, would be a real steal there as well.

Okay, if we get Ellis(or Dorsey), then taking a flyer on Chris Johnson sounds doable.

If, however, we don't- and come away with Rivers or Hardy, then Groves or, more likely, Trevor Laws sounds like the proper course.

DL
If Laws or Bryant is there I'd go with either. Both would work and Laws seems to be impressing in the recent scouting reports.

by goffchile on Apr 16, 2008 7:43 AM EDT reply actions

DTs
Laws was taken #26 (Jax). Dorsey, Ellis, Moore and Balmer are also off the board at DT.

Gholston, Harvey, Merlin, Campbell and Groves are also off the board.

With that, do you guys want to go with Hardy at WR?

by Josh Kirkendall on Apr 16, 2008 10:11 AM EDT reply actions

Sims
Sims might be a good choice.  Do you like him better than Bryant?

by goffchile on Apr 16, 2008 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions

I like Sims
...just a bit better than Bryant. But I wouldn't quibble about Red.

by BeerRun on Apr 16, 2008 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Hardy
If Hardy is there, maybe. We got Rivers in round one, right? So, a linebacker is unnecessary. I also keep forgetting that we should have a healthy Eric Henderson back at OLB or rush end this year as well. I'd go Chris Johnson here in round 2 because I know he won't still be available at 77. Think James Brooks with world class speed. Receivers can be had later, too. But Hardy would probably be worth it, depending on character issues.

Not sold on Hardy
I saw that Chris Johnson was gone.

I realize this is a mock draft, but I honestly don't think the Bengals would pick Hardy because of his assault charge. He also was suspended by the coach for reasons not related to the assault charge. That being said, he is a relative steal in that he is a first round talent going have way through the second round--but the Bengals have said that before.

What about Early Doucet?  It is not going to be a deep threat, but we need guys with good hands who can catch passes on third and 7. His scouting report indicates he's elusive after the catch. Maybe we could pick up a speedster later (William Frankin? Arman Shields?)

Another guy to think about at RB would be Matt Forte.

OK, no Hardy
So, DT Pat Simms -- as per beer run? We need to get at least one (we meaning real draft).

by Josh Kirkendall on Apr 16, 2008 11:36 AM EDT reply actions

I like it...
Hopefully we stay away from Manningham in the real draft too.. he's a little ocho psycho waiting to happen.

by kirby28 on Apr 16, 2008 3:24 PM EDT reply actions

Excellent
He's not Ellis but we need DT bad.

Don't forget
small school stud, Brian Johnston from Gardner-Webb.
6-5, 275 and a 4.6-4.7 40 in the late(6th,7th) rounds.

In real life
If we really end up with Rivers and Sims as our first two picks, I would quite happy and feel a little better about the future of or defense.

How many rounds does this thing go?

by goffchile on Apr 18, 2008 8:52 AM EDT reply actions

RE:
We had only planned for two rounds with a third only if there's time left -- I'm not sure yet if there will be a third. This thing has gone remarkably smooth.
