Bengals worked out former Ravens safety Christian Thompson

The Cincinnati Bengals are doing their due-diligence with free agents, especially with younger players.

The Cincinnati Bengals worked out former Baltimore Ravens safety Christian Thompson, according to reports. Thompson, a former fourth-round pick from the 2012 NFL draft, was waived by the Ravens after the second-year player had come off his four-game suspension for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

During the summer, he had dropped to third on the team's depth chart and was arguably dropped once the team signed former Bengals safety Jeromy Miles off waivers last month.

Thompson only played seven games during his rookie season, exclusively on special teams, before he was placed on Injured Reserve in mid-November last year with a knee injury.

Some of his strengths during the predraft process praised Thompson's frame and athleticism, though most of it was uncertain due to the lack of competition while playing for South Carolina State. If Cincinnati decided to do something with Thompson, such as an eventual signing on the team's practice squad, he should be viewed as a developmental player, extremely raw with a lot of work required.

The Bengals generally invite a handful of free agents on Tuesday to work out; it usually doesn't result in a signing, but helps improve their overall scouting reports just in case the team needs someone quick.
