Wide receivers in short supply

Paul Daugherty, on Monday, wrote that the offense, not a personal foul, cost the Bengals Sunday. But I argue, the Bengals offense isn't going to score 30-40 points each game -- would be nice, but that's unrealistic. There will be games the defense will have to battle to cover the struggling offense. The defense played well enough to win. But I still think our offense is fine; we're just waiting for our big weapons (Henry and Perry) to return. Then we can benefit from single coverage and mismatches.

However, the offense lost another receiver as Kelley Washington was ruled out this Sunday from a hamstring injury suffered against Tampa Bay.

So that leaves for this weekend:

  1. Chad Johnson
  2. T.J Houshmandzadeh
  3. Antonio Chatman
  4. Reggie McNeal
Wide receivers that are out Sunday:
  1. Chris Henry
  2. Tab Perry
Glen Holt is still on the practice squad but I doubt they sign him to the 53-man roster. When Perry comes back, they will have to free up a roster spot (i.e. John Busing). The same scenario will come up with Henry who doesn't count as a roster spot while on suspension. It wouldn't make sense to sign Holt only to waive him or allow him to re-sign with another practice squad -- unless they plan on letting him go anyway.

If Chris Perry plays Sunday, should he become the slot receiver against Carolina? Putting him against a linebacker may be a nice mis-match -- something we're struggling to find.

- Will Whitworth pass his "test" with Jones out?
