With the Free Agency period starting this Friday, the Bengals have made no moves to secure their own. Well, actually, they've signed Daniel Coats. With nine unrestricted free agents, six restricted free agents, and one exclusive-rights free agents left, the Bengals have 16 of their own going to the market if the Bengals keep doing what they're doing. Nothing.
However, while it's likely that many of our free agents will leave, there's a few that the team needs to work on keeping. Joe Reedy writes that the Bengals will "offer restricted free agent linebacker Rashad Jeanty a tender worth $1.545 million". This is the third-most tender a team can offer a restricted free agent, which comes with a second-round compensation pick if another team tries to sign Jeanty away.
This is a good move. The Bengals only have four players under contract for 2009, with three linebackers listed as restricted free agents (Jeanty, Brandon Johnson and Corey Mays). We suspect that Johnson will get the same tender that Jeanty received and Mays would likely receive the $1.01 million tender and risk no compensation because he wasn't drafted.
As of this posting, the tender isn't signed and is not official.
