I believe the more interesting storyline running right now outside of Training Camp happenings, is contract negotiations with Andre Smith. While no news has been presented this weekend about his holdout -- or, as Marvin Lewis said, "it's not a holdout", he's just unsigned and forbidden by NFL law to be here -- the head coach did say that once Smith makes his debut with the team, he'll get every opportunity to start at right tackle.
Rashad Jeanty sat out the second practice on Saturday, riding a "stationary bike just as a precaution to rest his lower leg. Rookie linebacker Rey Maualuga took the first-team reps Saturday night."
John Thornton admitted that he didn't sign with the Lions because he didn't want to play on a one-year deal and be away from his family. However, if the Bengals are in need, he'll sign with Cincinnati again.
Shayne Graham converted a 55-yard field goal. We know he has the leg on field goal attempts -- at least in practice. Now, if he can only do the same thing consistently on kickoffs, we'll be in business.
Cedric Benson wants to be the man effectively running the ball.
Michael Johnson caused havoc on Saturday.
The offense had a heck of a time trying to block rookie defensive end Michael Johnson on Saturday. His 6-7 frame was making O'Sullivan and Jordan Palmer step up or run out of the pocket. Then for good measure Johnson dropped into coverage and batted a pass away from rookie receiver Freddie Brown.
Marvin Lewis likes what he sees of Jeremi Johnson:
"Jeremi's done well in two practices," Lewis said. "He’s like a lot of other guys. He’s in a battle to try and make the football team, and he’s embracing his chance.”
