The Cincinnati Bengals won the game's opening coin toss, electing to defer. The Buffalo Bills receive and the Bengals defense starts the game after a Mike Nugent opening kickoff is returned to the Bengals 23-yard line. Ryan Fitzpatrick completed consecutive passes out of the gates with four and five wide receiver sets, completing a five-yard pass to Donald Nelson, followed with a nine-yard pass to Fred Jackson.

Fitzpatrick handed off on first down with 13:42 remaining in the first quarter, picking up three yards on an outside run to the right. Fitzpatrick was forced out of the pocket on second down, throwing a pass well out of bounds just before Michael Johnson and Carlos Dunlap knock the quarterback to the ground. Fitzpatrick failed to convert the Bills' first third down of the game, incompleting a pass to Stevie Johnson.

The Bills punt.
