Going after a cornerback in the first round of this year's NFL draft isn't that hard to imagine if you're a Bengals fan. Johnathan Joseph will be a free agent whenever the league agrees to a collective bargaining agreement with the players. Leon Hall and Adam Jones are playing the final year under their existing contract. Morgan Trent is signed through 2012 and Brandon Ghee is signed through 2013.
Bengals defensive backs coach Kevin Coyle attended Nebraska's Pro Day, scouting cornerback Prince Amukamara -- one of the top defensive back prospects in this year's NFL Draft. And as Gil Brandt points out, if Coyle is scouting a player, then the team is having serious thoughts about that player. So you know the team is actively looking at cornerbacks to replace Joseph with.
Another is LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson, who is listed as one of the top prospects in this year's draft (not just defensive back). If for anything other than due-diligence, the Bengals want to absorb as much information as possible before the NFL Draft.
According to Aaron Wilson, Peterson will visit the Bengals at some point this month. He's also scheduled to visit with the Broncos, Panthers, Cardinals and Bills. The Cleveland Browns have scheduled a private workout for this Wednesday and the Tennessee Titans before the NFL Draft.
