With the seventy-second pick in the 2011 Cincy Jungle Mock Draft, the New Orleans Saints select...

Kenrick Ellis, DT, Hampton

As I mentioned in the second round pick, they really need help in the defensive front seven.  They also could use a strong safety, somebody on the OL, and maybe a third tight end.  But their only true real "needs" are the DL and the OLBs.  Even though I've already drafted a DE and an OLB, it wouldn't be a terrible thing to draft another one of each.  But I don't see an ideal choice at either of those two spots at this time.  So I looked at the DTs instead and Ellis looks to be the best available that also fits the style of play the Saints would like.  He is already very good at run defense and has all the tools necessary to be great at pass rushing as well -- and already is pretty good at it -- with a bit of seasoning and coaching.

Now if Cincinnati was picking this guy, every newspaper in the country would be right back on the "jailbird Bungles" theme in about three second flat.  Fortunately, I'm not picking for the local boys.  Though he got dismissed from a major college for multiple violations of conduct policy, he cleaned up his act and got back into the game in D-1AA where he was a man among boys.  Also, the Saints have a strong locker room that can help guys recovering from past character mistakes turn their lives around, which they've done (successfully) to multiple players over the last few years.  So as long as the Saints are sure this guy's really trying to reform -- and his time at Hampton seems to show that he has and is -- then they won't have a problem with taking him.
