Bengals linebacker Dan Skuta substituted middle linebacker during Friday's game against the Detroit Lions, replacing Rey Maualuga in your typical player rotation during a preseason game. Reviews on Skuta's rush defense have been favorable, posting seven tackles, five solo during his stint at as the team's middle linebacker. Yet on more than one occasion, Skuta was often a step slow in coverage, either against tight ends or running backs out of the backfield.
According to Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer, Skuta is taking snaps as a strongside linebacker with the second-team on Monday, which opens backup middle linebacker spot for undrafted free agent DeQuin Evans. Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com writes that Evans:
...continues to look terrific and opened up a lot of eyes with the way he came off the edge Friday with his hand on the ground.
Though as Hobson points out, Evans "still seems" like a practice squad candidate.
