The NFL combine is winding down as defensive backs, the last group, are working out today. The results of the combine will, without a doubt, change theories on mock drafts, as will pro days and, of course, free agency. It's still a little premature to accurately predict what teams will do in the first round of the draft outside of the first few picks, but that doesn't stop it from being fun.
In SB Nation's latest mock draft, put together by David Fucillo, the Cincinnati Bengals do something familiar and something new in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft.
With the 17th overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft, the Bengals get Stanford guard David DeCastro in SB Nation's latest mock.
This could prove to be one of the steals of the first round. If that is the case, it is just one more reason for the Bengals to thank the Raiders for dealing for Carson Palmer. The Bengals did a fairly solid job in keeping Andy Dalton upright, but struggled in getting much going in their running game. Regardless of who is running the ball in 2012, the Bengals will want to boost their offensive line, and DeCastro could be one of the best to come out of this class.
Then, with their second pick in the first round, the Bengals don't go after a running back, cornerback, safety or even a receiver, but a defensive tackle -- Mississippi State defensive tackle Fletcher Cox.
The Bengals have a big cornerback need that might be filled with one of these two picks, but based on this mock, it would be a reach for a corner at this point. The Bengals have free agents along their defensive line, which opens the door for some needed depth in free agency and the draft. Cox could end up outside, but, as is, he could be a very solid interior pass rusher in the Bengals defense.
You can't ever have too many pass rushers. The NFL is a passing league and one of the best ways to stop the Tom Brady's, Aaron Rodgers', Drew Brees' and, yes, Ben Roethlisberger's, is to have guys that hunt down quarterbacks. The Bengals already have some talented pass rushers in Geno Atkins, Carlos Dunlap and Michael Johnson, but there's nothing wrong with adding another.
