NFL owners are expected to arrive in Atlanta soon for a Tuesday meeting that will discuss several proposals previously tabled during league meetings roughly months ago. Two items that owners will vote on includes the requirement of knee, hip and thigh pads as well as a two-week extension for the trading deadline.
Currently players are not required to wear pads below their waist, mostly positions that require top-end speed such as wide receivers and cornerbacks.
According to NFL.com writer Jeff Darlington, owners will discuss other proposals.
The league also will discuss a potential rule that would allow a team to return one player from injured reserve to the active roster by a certain point in the season. This rule received some attention during the March meeting, but the competition committee and the owners decided to wait before passing it.
Owners wanted to discuss the additional of another roster spot for a "player who has been diagnosed with a concussion" presumably to help with a little roster relief. The discussion was removed from the agenda, probably due to the incendiary nature of the topic, as well as pending lawsuits against the league from former players citing post-career concussion issues.
NFL owners passed several proposals during their meetings in March; including postseason overtime rules carried over into the regular season, loss of down penalty for kicking a loose ball, dead-ball foul for too many men on the field, expansion of defenseless player rule, automatic review of turnovers via instant replays.
