The Bengals have claimed offensive guard Matt Murphy off waivers from the Indianapolis Colts. Murphy classifies as a first year NFL player and he was signed to the Colts practice squad on September 28th of last season. He went undrafted in last years draft and signed as a college free agent with the Atlanta Falcons on July 27th. He was waived by the Falcons at the end of the 2011 preseason.
Though we could be wrong, the acquisition of Murphy is probably just an effort to add a training camp body. He could also be a strong candidate to end up on the practice squad and get the development that he needs there. The team seems to be set at the guard position with Travelle Wharton and Kevin Zeitler as the likely starters and the backups include last years fourth round pick Clint Boling, as well as Otis Hudson, and Anthony Collins, who can also play tackle. During his senior season, Murphy was named to the All-Mountain West Honorable Mention team. He was a team captain at UNLV and started all four seasons at offensive tackle.
