Maualuga said he felt his future with the Bengals hinged on his play during Saturday's game against Houston, and if that's the case, he could be on shaky ground. Maualuga finished with six solo tackles and assisted on four, and he failed to record a sack or tackle for loss.
Over the course of the 2012 season, Maualuga compiled 62 solo tackles and 60 assists, and he added one sack and one tackle for loss. His tackle numbers were career highs, but his single tackle for loss was a career low.
The Bengals selected Maualuga, a fourth-year player out of USC, in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft. During his time with the Trojans, he was a unanimous All-American in 2008 and first-team All-Pac-10 player from 2006-08. In his final season at USC, he was named Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year and won the Bednarik Award, given to the nation's top defensive player.
