2013 Free Agency: Bengals Interested In Beanie Wells

The Bengals are in the market for a running back, we already knew that. According to sources, they're interested in former Buckeye back Beanie Wells.

The Bengals, along with the Steelers, are interested in free agent running back Beanie Wells, according to ESPN's Jamison Hensley. Wells, a former first-round pick, was released by the Arizona Cardinals on Monday because of his inability to stay healthy. He has only played in one full season of his four in the league.

The Bengals have already stated that they're looking to sign a back to complement BenJarvus Green-Ellis, who was signed by the Bengals prior to the 2012 season. Wells doesn't seem to be a complement to Green-Ellis, though, as they are both between the tackles power backs.

The Steelers are looking for a featured back, but they don't have much salary-cap room to spend on a high-profile one. The Bengals are looking to add another running back to go with BenJarvus Green-Ellis, although it was assumed they would pursue a more explosive runner.

The former Buckeye running back has carried the ball 625 times for 2,471 yards and 24 touchdowns. His best year came in 2011 when he rushed for 1,047 yards and 10 touchdowns, making it his only 1,000-yard season.

The Bengals seem to be more likely to draft a running back with explosive qualities that is more of a home run threat than Wells or Green-Ellis. It seems somewhat surprising that they would be interested in Wells or Steven Jackson, who they had been rumored to be interested in as well, unless they plan to move away from Green-Ellis in 2013.
