When responding to a question about the criticism leveled against linebacker Rey Maualuga, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis quickly identified those propagating the negativity. At first the quote was, "because they (fans) look at some dumb ass website that doesn't have any idea of what football is."
Naturally a composed site manager that's runs this very fine website could only conclude, "Oh my goodness, Marvin gave us a shout out!"
But that wasn't the entirety of the quote.
Joe Reedy with the Cincinnati Enquirer, who took part of the interview with Lewis Tuesday afternoon, transcribed the interview:
"Because they look at some dumb ass web site that doesn’t have any idea of what football is. The same website that two years ago that rated Kelly Jennings the best tackling corner in the NFL. These people who aren’t football they are trying to be critical. We’ll be as critiquing of Rey as we need to be, we don’t need any help."
Ah, Kelly Jennings. Remember him? I remember him. The posting Lewis refers to a Pro Football Focus article that summarized the best tackling cornerbacks in the NFL following the 2011 season. Naturally we highlighted the posting as a form of discourse for our readers, most of whom are Cincinnati's best clients and ticket buyers, adding that Jennings' play that year was mostly a struggle.
That being said, really? Maualuga being a struggle according to Pro Football Focus is only a percentage behind the linebacker's criticism, many of whom used the old fashioned method of watching the game and recalling the most recent against Houston.
Either way, take note that when you visit Pro Football Focus, know that Marvin Lewis is probably kicking a cute bunny.
