Chad Johnson's Attorney Files Appeal For 30-Day Jail Sentence

Things have officially snowballed on former NFL wide receiver, Chad Johnson.

After a domestic scuffle with his then-wife last summer, Johnson was out of a job and went through a subsequent divorce. After being placed on parole, Johnson violated those parameters recently, which landed him in court earlier this week. Then, after a favorable plea deal was struck, Johnson playfully slapped the behind of his lawyer and enraged the judge presiding over the hearing. He was then sentenced to 30 days in jail for his antics.

Opinions on the judge's decision on Johnson's actions are mixed, with many stating that they believe that she overreacted--likely because of the laughter that ensued from those that were present in the courtroom. Because of this, many sources are reporting that Johnson's legal representation is seeking a lessening of the sentence.

In the appeal, Johnson's legal representation cited the laughter as out of the receiver's control, thus should not be held against him.

"Mr. Johnson has been a professional football player in theNational Football League for 11 years and patting another individual on the backside is viewed as a sign of respect and gratitude," the motion read. "It is clear that the court misinterpreted Mr. Johnson’s interaction with his attorney."

"This (the courtroom laughter) is not Mr. Johnson's fault and he should not be punished for the actions of third parties."

There isn't any word yet on the decision of this appeal. While this plays out, Johnson remains behind bars serving the original 30-day sentence.
