Boyd was an undrafted free agent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers earlier this year. He earned a spot on the roster as an invite during the team's rookie minicamp in May. However, he was waived when the Buccaneers signed Derek Hagan in June. Boyd played college ball at North Carolina and generated 13 career touchdowns in four seasons on 44 receptions and 860 yards receiving. Multiple leg injuries impacted Boyd's senior season.
The Bengals currently have 11 wide receivers on their training camp roster, including what figures to be A.J. Green, Mohamed Sanu, Marvin Jones and Andrew Hawkins. With Green out at least through the first preseason game, perhaps longer, the Bengals are likely adding bodies to prevent any need from using key players like Sanu or Jones extensively during exhibition games.
