NFL Roster Cuts: Bengals release fullback John Conner

Despite having a strong camp and preseason, the Bengals release John Conner, electing to go in the Orson Charles direction.

David Kohl-USA TODAY Sports

Well, at least my 53-man roster prediction was ripped apart early.

According to Joe Reedy with the Cincinnati Enquirer, John Conner has been released from the team.

NFL Insiders Aaron Wilson and Adam Caplan have confirmed the move.

I wouldn't call the move surprising -- more disappointing. However, that should give Orson Charles and even tight end Alex Smith a level of comfort. It's also clear that the Bengals are shying away from the traditional fullback role that they've favored over the years -- save for '10 when Reggie Kelly was the H-back (the role that Charles is training for).

Additional with the news that the Bengals lost Emmanuel Lamur for the season and DeQuin Evans will be suspended for the first half of the season, the Bengals need to make 19 more moves to get within the 53-man roster.
