Linebacker J.K. Schaffer confirms release

Bengals linebacker J.K. Schaffer confirmed Saturday afternoon that he was released earlier in the morning.

USA TODAY Sports

We pointed out in the roster stream that Jeff Ruby sent out a tweet that linebacker J.K. Schaffer was informed that he didn't make the 53-man roster Saturday morning.

Let's go ahead and confirm that.

Geoff Hobson at Bengals.com writes that the Bengals will likely return to the team's practice squad if he clears waivers. Obviously Schaffer would love to be claimed and signed to an active 53-man roster (required if someone is claimed through waivers), but he'd be alright returning to Cincinnati's practice squad.

This is his home.

"If I got claimed, I'd be ecstatic because that means I'd be on a roster," said Schaffer via Bengals.com. "I'd love to be here. I want to be here. I'm disappointed, but I know that the people who make these decisions have been making them longer than I've been playing and that you have to respect that."

After bouncing around in Tampa Bay and Jacksonville, Schaffer was signed on the team's practice squad in early November last year. He led the team in tackles during the preseason and posted an interception and quarterback sack during the finale against Indianapolis.
