Cincinnati Bengals offensive tackle Eric Winston may start on Monday, which would mark his first start with the Cincinnati Bengals since signing with the team on Dec. 2. With Andre Smith going on season-ending injured reserve with a tricep tear and backup Marshall Newhouse struggling, Cincinnati sought help with the veteran right tackle.
He's played two games so far with 11 snaps against the Pittsburgh Steelers and 33 last Sunday against the Browns, allowing the team to move Clint Boling back to his natural left guard spot.
"I remember at some point there in the third quarter I told (offensive line coach) Paul (Alexander), 'Put him in, let's go,'" offensive coordinator Hue Jackson said via the Cincinnati Enquirer. "He's smart and he comes from a good background, good teams. He's been coached really well. I'm not surprised at it. I'm not surprised at anything he does. He is really a bright football player and he knows how to play the game."
According to Pro Football Focus, Winston has played well in pass protection (+1.1) and hasn't allowed a pass distribution yet. However, he's also struggled as a run blocker (-1.2).
Regardless, the Bengals are happy to have him.
"We're pleased with Eric's progress," said head coach Marvin Lewis on Thursday. "He's been what we expected. He wants an opportunity to continue to play and help us to win games and get in the playoffs and go through the playoffs. It was a good fit for us and I'm glad it worked out. Like any great, good pro he's embraced the learning part and spent the time and everything to get up to speed."
