Compensatory Picks for 2014 NFL Draft Announced

Every year, roughly around the annual league meetings in March, the NFL hands out what's called compensatory picks for the NFL Draft, given to teams that lost "qualifying free agents" during the previous year's free agency.

The Cincinnati Bengals will receive two compensatory picks in the sixth (212th overall) and seventh rounds (252nd overall) for the 2014 NFL draft. Part of the formula includes the team losing defensive tackle Pat Sims (Raiders), linebacker Manny Lawson (Bills) and quarterback Bruce Gradkowski (Steelers), Dan Skuta (49ers) and Josh Brown (Giants). Cincinnati's lone acquisitions that qualified for the formula included quarterback Josh Johnson, offensive guard Mike Pollak and tight end Alex Smith.

Every year, roughly around the annual league meetings in March, the NFL hands out what's called compensatory picks for the NFL Draft, given to teams that lost "qualifying free agents" during the previous year's free agency. It's a complicated formula that's designed to help teams to receive something after losing free agents. Things like playing time, compensation and the playoffs are applied to the formula.

Compensatory picks, which have been awarded since 1994, cannot be traded.

Considering that most of Cincinnati's compensatory selections have come in the seventh round, they haven't had the best of luck finding players with their compensatory picks. A handful of the more successful selections includes linebacker Landon Johnson, safety Chinedum Ndukwe, and wide Andre Caldwell.

Cincinnati has been awarded with 22 compensatory picks in the team's history -- of which we could only determine 17. Of those that we actually determined, nine have been seventh rounders -- five are third-rounders, one fourth-rounder and two from the sixth round. We'll update this list.

It's not necessarily an all-star list.
