Breaking down Domata Peko's two-year extension

Prior to his extension, Peko was scheduled to earn $4.125 million in 2014 with a $4.325 million cap hit. Nearly $2.9 million of his 2014 base salary been shifted to a $4.4 million roster bonus (all of it guaranteed), which increases his 2014 cap number to $5.9 million.

Cincinnati signing Domata Peko to a two-year extension is hardly a surprise -- both sides have expressed interest since last season. And while the statistics rarely favor a nose tackle, whose primary responsibility is to consume blockers, the team loves securing Peko for another two years through the 2016 season.

"Domata has been a significant and productive player for our defense for many years now," head coach Marvin Lewis said. "He is a leader among our veterans and a mentor for our younger players, and securing his future as a Bengal through the next three seasons is another positive step in continuing to improve our team."

Had the Bengals used that money for a signing bonus, his cap number is significantly reduced. On the other hand, the extension essentially means that the contract is still a one-year agreement with a $1.5 million roster bonus due in 2015. If Cincinnati elects to move on after this season, they won't face any penalties.
