NFL Draft Rumors: Derek Carr favored to be drafted by Houston Texans

Day 2 of the 2014 NFL Draft will kick off at 7 p.m. Friday, and the Houston Texans may already have their man identified with the No. 33 pick.

Essentially an extra first-round pick, the Texans have their choice of several players with first-round grades, including Missouri DE Kony Ealy, Virginia OT Morgan Moses and Fresno State QB Derek Carr.

Speaking of Carr, getting a potential starting NFL QB at this point is probably the best thing that could happen to the Texans after bypassing on one in the first round.

Dale Robertson of the Houston Chronicle considers Carr the leader to be the Texans' pick at No. 33 overall.

And the leader in the clubhouse with the first round finished is, yep, Derek Carr. He's the consensus highest-rated QB left on the board.

"It's hard to find a weakness," former Giants quarterback Phil Simms said of David Carr's kid brother. "You know what the weakness is? The last name. Because his brother didn't succeed . . . it's unfair. The guy has size. He can make all the throws. And the guy can run. What's not to like?"

Rich Gannon, another former NFL quarterback, calls Carr "the best pure passer" in the draft and suggests he's a different kind of player than the Texans' first-ever draft choice was. "He's got size and arm strength, and toughness."

Carr threw for 12,842 yards and 113 touchdowns at Fresno, including more than 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns with just eight interceptions as a senior. He's been a very productive player his entire career, and though he was overrated heading into the draft, he probably is still an upgrade over Case Keenum and an aging Ryan Fitzpatrick.
