Cincinnati Bengals Player Preview: Mike Nugent

Much discussion happens in the offseason about almost every position. For the Bengals however, the kicker is not getting much scrutiny.

There are all kinds of stats you want in your kicking game. There are stats around the percentages of field goals made from any distance in any environment. There is one stat that is measured simply in a yes or no fashion.

Is your kicker clutch?

The Bengals' Mike Nugent is one of those clutch kickers and proved it in back-to-back wins last season. First against the Buffalo Bills on the road, Nugent was set up with a 43 yard kick to secure the win in overtime. No problem. Then in the Bengals next game against the Lions on the road, he was set up with a 54 yd kick as time expired. Again, no sweat.

Nugent has 7 game winning field goals in the last 2 minutes of the game or overtime.

In 2013, Nugent converted 18/22 field goal attempts (81.8%) with his longest being a a 54-yarder.

In the 2014 season, Mike Nugent is going to again be asked to do two things. Kick the ball off and make field goals. As long as he continues with the success he has shown up to this point with the Bengals, this is a position and player we should have little worries with. I expect the same type numbers as last season and the opportunity to win at least one more game at the gun.
