Potential Bengals 2015 salary cap casualties: Robert Geathers

There are a couple of contracts that the Cincinnati Bengals should look at this offseason, mostly to compare cost with production. Here, we take a look at Robert Geathers.

2015 Salary: $2.85 million
2015 Cap Number: $3.05 million
Dead Money if Released: $0

Robert Geathers, selected in the fourth round of the 2004 NFL draft, completed his 11th season with the Bengals, playing 152 career games while generating (only) 34.0 quarterback sacks, 18 passes defensed, an interception and 325 tackles.

Noted mostly as a run defender that plays a bulk of his downs in rotation, Geathers has only surpassed four quarterback sacks in a season once... that being in 2006 when he collected 10.5 sacks, which earned him a six-year deal worth $33.75 million.

Is the cost worth the production?

In the eight combined seasons since his 10-sack season in '06, Geathers has only generated 17 quarterback sacks while pocketing (at least) $37.5 million. According to the Pro Football Focus grading scale, Geathers has accumulated an overall score of -120.1 and a run defensive score of -28.2.

Despite questionable production on the field after 11 seasons, Geathers is viewed as clubhouse leader who has helped younger players develop.
