The Bengals hit the field for a rare Monday practice with the team coming off a bye week.
Because the team has been off since last Tuesday afternoon, they opted for an extra session this week on Monday (as is typical coming off a bye week) before hitting the field again on Wednesday as the normal practice schedule resumes. The week off came at a good time with several players nicked up with minor injuries.
No injury is more important than that of linebacker Vontaze Burfict, who remains on the PUP list and worked on the rehab field Monday. With three more practices this week, Burfict will need to participate in all three of them if he's going to play Sunday, considering he hasn't practiced since October 2014. At this time, it seems unlikely Burfict will play in Pittsburgh, though only time will tell.
Rookie offensive tackle Cedric Ogbuehi was also on the rehab field Monday. It appears unlikely Ogbuehi will be moved off the PUP list this week, and a move probably won't be made next week either with a short turnaround as Cincinnati hosts Cleveland on Thursday Night Football in Week 9. Reserve linebacker Sean Porter was on the rehab field as well, though there's been no update provided on his status or when he may return.
There was good news though Monday with defensive end Michael Johnson returning to the field. He was knocked out of the Week 6 win over the Bills with what was determined to be a bone bruise.
Also back practicing was linebacker Vinny Rey, who left in the third quarter of the Bills game with an ankle injury that kept him from returning to the game, though he was seen on the sideline later on in the game. With Burfict looking iffy at best for this week, having every linebacker on the 53-man roster healthy will be key for Sunday's matchup with the Steelers.
Cornerback Leon Hall was also back on the practice field after a back injury kept him out of Week 6 at Buffalo. He also missed the lone practice last week, but it looks like Hall got enough rest to play at Pittsburgh coming off a bye week.
Defensive end Wallace Gilberry sat out with either an undisclosed injury, or was simply getting a veteran's rest day off. He was dealing with a calf injury that had him questionable to play in Week 5 vs the Seahawks, but was not on the injury report against the Bills.
