With 5:06 remaining in the first quarter, Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton took a shotgun snap from the Steelers' four-yard line. Running back Giovani Bernard routed toward the line of scrimmage on a designed screen before pivoting towards his quarterback. Steelers Stephon Tuitt read the play and intercepted the football. Dalton made the tackle.

After the play, Dalton immediately returned to the sidelines to speak with trainers, who examined his right thumb. Eventually they escorted him back to the lockerroom, where they declared him out for the rest of the game.

Backup quarterback AJ McCarron is his replacement.
