With Andy Dalton out with an injured right thumb, backup quarterback AJ McCarron entered the game during Cincinnati's second possession. Following a five-play (with 37 yards worth of penalties from the Steelers) possession that ended in a missed field goal, the Bengals, down 13-0 with more than seven minutes remaining in the second quarter, took the field with McCarron under center.
Following a 14-yard run by Giovani Bernard, the Bengals had first down from their own 34-yard line with 6:33 remaining in the second quarter. McCarron immediately identified A.J. Green down the right sidelines and launched a perfect pass, hitting his target in perfect stride.
