Bengals sign Chris Lewis-Harris to practice squad

New, comments

The Bengals have made another addition to the practice squad, which is now back to 10 players after Troy Hill was called up last week. Now Chris Lewis-Harris is back on the team, as a practice squad player.

The Cincinnati Bengals have signed cornerback Chris Lewis-Harris to the practice squad, the team announced Tuesday. He was on the 53-man roster for the first 12 weeks of the season.

Lewis-Harris was waived last week in order to make room for Troy Hill to join the 53-man roster from the practice squad, so in essence, Hill and Lewis-Harris have swapped spots over the past week. Lewis-Harris was dealing with a rib injury suffered in Week 12, that would have led to him being inactive last Sunday during a 37-3 win over the Cleveland Browns.

That game saw Cincinnati having just four healthy corners as slot man Leon Hall also sat out due to a back injury. The Bengals needed another body on the active roster at cornerback for Sunday, which is why Hill was called up and played significant snaps Sunday.

Lewis-Harris, now in his fourth NFL season, originally came to the NFL after being signed by the Bengals as an undrafted free agent out of Tennessee-Chattanooga in 2012. He's been on the practice squad at times while getting called up and playing in games in each of his four seasons in Cincinnati. However, Lewis-Harris has appeared in just 17 career games, five of which came this season with a variety of injuries at cornerback.

Depending on how the other injured Bengals corners look this week, it's possible Lewis-Harris could be back on the 53-man roster soon. Hall is dealing with a nagging back injury. Adam Jones has a foot issue that led to him missing Week 11 and being questionable for Weeks 11 and 12 before ultimately playing.

Then there's the status of rookie corner Josh Shaw. He left Sunday's game with a scary back injury that looked serious at first, but was able to walk it off and later said an MRI showed no damage. It's still too early to know if he'll play this week, which could help Lewis-Harris get his job back.

There's also the possibility of another free agent corner joining the 53-man roster, or Asa Jackson could get called up from the practice squad. Jackson just joined the practice squad last week after being with the Baltimore Ravens earlier in the year. As Lewis-Harris is likely still recovering from his rib injury, it's possible he won't be healthy enough to play in the near future, which would help give Jackson the edge for a roster spot, if another corner is needed on the roster.

Here's a look at what the 10-man practice squad looks like following Lewis-Harris' signing.
