Bengals Transactions: Who was signed, drafted and lost this offseason

New, comments

The offseason seems to last forever, so forgive us if this recap of it takes a little while to read though as we go through the happenings of the Bengals offseason to prepare you for Training Camp in 2 weeks.

With the start of NFL training camps nearing, it's time to recap what the Cincinnati Bengals have done this offseason.

90-Man Roster Additions

For Cincinnati, the offseason officially began on January 5, the day after losing to the Indianapolis Colts in the wild-card round of the NFL playoffs. That's when the Bengals were able to begin signing players to Reserve/Future contracts.

LB L.J. Fort, OT Dan France, DT Kwame Geathers, CB Onterio McCalebb, TE Jake Murphy, WR Tevin Reese, WR Eric Ward, DE Sam Montgomery, and RB James Wilder Jr. were among those added to fill out the 90-man roster. The Bengals have since waived Ward and Fort.

Free Agency

The first free agent the Bengals officially signed this offseason was OT Matthew O'Donnell. Because O'Donnell ended the 2014 season not on an NFL roster, he was free to sign with anyone before free agency officially opened on March 9.

OG Mike Pollak was the first Bengals player to be cut this offseason. It's since been revealed he's dealing with knee issues lead to his retirement. DE Robert Geathers and WR Greg Little were later cut as well.

The first re-signing of one of their own free agents Cincinnati made was that of LB Rey Maualuga. Before Maualuga could hit free agency, he re-upped with Cincinnati for three years and $15 million. K Mike Nugent was also resigned before free agency opened, as he inked a two-year deal with the team.

With their own key free agents being taken care of, Cincinnati moved onto its restricted and exclusive-rights free agents, all of whom were tendered to one-year deals. Those included LB Emmanuel Lamur,  CB Chris Lewis-Harris and DT Devon Still.

The first unrestricted free agent the Bengals signed after the start of free agency was LB A.J. Hawk. The former Packers starter and all-time tackle leader inked a two-year deal to bolster Cincinnati's thin LB depth.

Later, the Bengals scored arguably their biggest offensive signing of the offseason by re-signing OG Clint BolingHe was re-signed to a five-year deal to remain the Bengals starting LG for the foreseeable future.

RT Eric Winston was also re-signed to a one-year deal to ensure every major contributor from the Bengals' offensive line was back sans Marshall Newhouse, though you can argue he wasn't a major contributor. Newhouse got a two-year deal with the New York Giants.

The biggest free-agent signing on the defensive side of the ball came in the form of DE Michael Johnson. He signed a four-year deal with the Bengals after spending just one year in Tampa Bay before they cut him.

DT Pat Sims was also brought back to Cincinnati on a one-year deal after a two-year hiatus in Oakland. Another former Raiders player signed by the Bengals was WR Denarius Moore, who also got a one-year deal.

Other re-signings Cincinnati made include WR Brandon Tate, RB Cedric Peerman and CB Brandon Ghee. All three players will likely be limited to special-teams contributions if they make the final 53-man roster this year.

There was also the signing of QB Terrelle Pryor, who he would be cut just a month later after failing to impress as a QB. That was fun.

Two other QBs signed this offseason include Keith Wenning and Josh Johnson. Wenning is a project who spent last year on the Ravens' practice squad. Johnson is a veteran of seven seasons, one of which came as the Bengals' backup in 2013.

As far as Cincinnati's biggest loss this offseason, starting CB Terence Newman left to sign with Minnesota on a one-year deal to reunite with his old DC, Mike Zimmer. S Taylor Mays also signed with the Vikings, but wound up being cut and later signing with Detroit.

Fifth-Year Options

The Bengals had not one, but two players with fifth-year options picked up this offseason. Both 2012 first-round picks, OG Kevin Zeitler and CB Dre Kirkpatrick are now under contract through the 2016 NFL season, but will come at a steep price.

Kirkpatrick will receive $7.5 million guaranteed while Zeitler will rake in $8 million for the 2016 season. Don't expect that to be the case next year though as Cincinnati looks to hammer out long-term deals with both players.

Coaching Moves

The Bengals managed to keep most of their coaching staff intact. The one addition made was Robert Livingston, the team's Southeast Scout since 2012, who moved to the team's coaching staff under the title of Defensive Quality Control/Special Teams Assistant.
