The Cincinnati Bengals will have several key players sitting out in their preseason opener against the New York Giants.
The team made the following announcement on Twitter:
NEWS- Not expected to play tonight: -K Mike Nugent -QB AJ McCarron -CB Brandon Ghee -OL Trey Hopkins -OL Andre Smith -DE Michael Johnson
— Cincinnati Bengals (@Bengals) August 14, 2015
Backup quarterback A.J. McCarron was already unlikely to go after missing most of the past week of practice with what's been reported as a rib injury, chest strain or unknown injury.
Defensive end Michael Johnson was also not expected to play after missing most of the past two weeks with an MCL sprain that should keep him out for the rest of the preseason.
Cornerback Brandon Ghee suffered a hamstring injury this week, which sidelined him for the two joint practices with the Giants on Tuesday and Wednesday.

It's unclear as to what injury is affecting offensive lineman Trey Hopkins. He probably is dealing with something though as a young, second-year player like himself is fighting for a spot on the final 53-man roster.
That's not the case though with starting tackle Andre Smith and kicker Mike Nugent. They're most likely getting a rest day, typical for veterans of their nature. This also gives more time for second-round tackle Jae Fisher and undrafted free agent kicker Tom Obarski to show what they're capable of.
Also not playing tonight are outside linebackers Sean Porter and Vontaze Burfict as they remain on PUP. Offensive tackle Cedric Ogbuehi is also out as he remains on the NFI List.
