The Bengals had several players sitting out in their preseason opener against the Giants before losing several more during the contest.
The most notable injury to come out of the game was to cornerback Darqueze Dennard. He suffered a groin strain in the second half that knocked him out for the rest of the contest. When asked of Dennard's status after the game, head coach Marvin Lewis simply said, "We’ll see."
Lewis said the same of running back Rex Burkhead and his neck injury suffered in the first half. Burkhead was having a good game before suddenly coming out of the game to most people's surprise. Whatever happened, it didn't look like anything serious. He was deemed 'questionable' for a return, so it probably will be a quick turnaround until he's back on the field.
Running back Cedric Peerman left the game with a knee injury that looked to be significant, but not season-ending. He was able to walk off the field under his own power when the injury happened, though never returned to the game.
Backup safety Shawn Williams left the game for a short time with a hand injury but was able to come back into the game, though was seen favoring his other hand several times.
As for injured Bengals who didn't play at all, Backup quarterback A.J. McCarron, who missed most of the past week of practice with what's been reported as a rib injury, chest strain or unknown injury.
Also being held out were defensive end Margus Hunt and offensive tackle Jake Fisher. Hunt was expected to be inactive after just being activated from PUP last week. It's unclear as to what held Fisher out.
Defensive end Michael Johnson also did not play after missing most of the past two weeks with an MCL sprain that should keep him out for the rest of the preseason.
Cornerback Brandon Ghee was held out after he suffered a hamstring injury this week, which sidelined him for the two joint practices with the Giants on Tuesday and Wednesday.
It's still unclear as to what injury led to offensive lineman Trey Hopkins being held out. He probably is dealing with something though as a young, second-year player like himself is fighting for a spot on the final 53-man roster.
Starting tackle Andre Smith got the night off, veteran kicker Mike Nugent turned out to have a hamstring injury that helped lead to him not playing. That allowed undrafted free agent kicker Tom Obarski to show what he was capable of, though Nugent's job looks safe.
Also sitting out were linebackers Sean Porter and Vontaze Burfict as they remain on PUP. Offensive tackle Cedric Ogbuehi was held out as he remains on the NFI List.
