Bengals sign WR Michael Bennett; waive Jake Murphy

Another former Georgia Bulldog becomes a Cincinnati Bengal.

The Cincinnati Bengals have signed former Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Michael Bennett, the team announced Wednesday. In a corresponding move, the Bengals waived tight end Jake Murphy.

Bennett, a 6'2", 202-pound receiver, caught 134 passes for 1,607 yards (12.0 ypc) and 17 scores during his four years in Athens. Bennett went undrafted in the 2015 NFL draft, mainly due to knee injuries suffered throughout his college career, most recently an ACL injury heading into last season's Belk Bowl. Bennett tore another ACL during practice in 2012 and a meniscus at the end of 2013.

Bennett becomes the latest former Georgia Bulldog turned Cincinnati Bengal. Other Bulldogs currently on the roster include defensive tackle Geno Atkins, defensive end Kwame Geathers, safety Shawn Williams, wide receiver A.J. Green.

As for Murphy, he entered the NFL in 2014 as a college free agent with Oakland and was waived on Aug. 30. He was on the Miami practice squad from Sept. 30 through Oct. 28 before the Bengals added him to their practice squad and later to the 90-man offseason roster.

Murphy didn't have much of a chance to make it onto the 53-man roster as a tight end and the team is still searching for more depth at wide receiver, which Bennett will now fight for a chance to supply them with.
