NFL roster cuts 2015 dates and times: Bengals news and rumors on the way

The NFL is approaching several deadlines where teams initiate the process of reducing their roster to 75 and then 53 players. We take a look at the rules and schedule.

THE RULE

For most players in the NFL, there are two deadlines of significance. Teams must be under the 75-man roster limit by 4 p.m. (ET) on Tuesday, Sept. 1. Teams will be required to be at (or under) the 53-man roster by 4 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, Sept. 5. Teams can sign/announce their practice squad starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6.

HOW MANY PLAYERS MUST BE RELEASED

The Bengals currently have 87 players on their roster (as of this posting). They will need to waive/release 12 players prior to Tuesday's deadline.

In most cases, these transactions usually take place well before the deadline. Following Cincinnati's third preseason game in Arizona on Aug. 24, 2014, the team released five players the following afternoon.

The big deadline is Sept. 5, where 34 players on the current roster will be dumped from the regular season roster -- a handful will stick around for the practice squad.

THE PRACTICE SQUAD SCHEDULE

Players waived during final cuts can be claimed by any team until 12 p.m. EST on Sunday, Sept. 6. Teams are allowed to establish their practice squads at 1 p.m.

THE SCHEDULE:

Tuesday, Sept. 1, 4 p.m.: NFL rosters must be down to 75 players.

Thursday, Sept. 3, 7 p.m.: Preseason finale in Indianapolis

Saturday, Sept. 5, 4 p.m.: NFL rosters must be down to 53 players
