Injury Update: Marvin Jones returns but held out of Mock Game; Rey Maualuga still out

Marvin Jones appeared to be practicing today after he came out in a jersey and warmed up with the team, but he was held out of the team scrimmage and was put on the rehab field instead of playing. Ray Maualuga also continues to be held out.

UPDATE: It turns out that, while Marvin Jones did dress and stretch with the team, he later went over to work on the rehab field instead of participating in the Mock Game.

In a bit of a surprise, Marvin Jones was able to return to Bengals training camp Saturday morning in time for the team's mock game.

Jones, who had missed four straight days of practice, was dealing with a hamstring injury and general soreness around his body. That's to be expected for a player who hasn't consistently gone through live hitting since the end of the 2013 season. It's clear now the injuries that were keeping Jones out weren't major now that he's already back on the field. However, Jones was held out of the mock game after warming up with the team in a jersey.

Linebacker Rey Maualuga continued to be held out as he remains on the Active/Non-Football Injury list. He's now missed all eight training camp sessions with what was initially called a minor, but undisclosed injury. With each passing day, it's looking more and more like the injury is more major than the Bengals are letting on.

Andrew Whitworth got a veteran's rest day off, which is actually a good move. There's no sense in risking a player of his importance in a mock scrimmage. In turn, Jake Fisher will get more reps and chances to show if he's capable of playing significant snaps as a rookie.

Wide receiver Onterio McCalebb continues to be held out with a knee injury that's cost him almost an entire week of practice now. His long odds of making the 53-man roster continue to shrink.

Running back Cedric Peerman also got the day off with conflicting reports of whether it's a veteran's rest day or due to a big hit he took last Sunday. Cornerback Adam Jones returned after he was given a rest day on Friday.
