Despite what many fans considered to be a pretty good game by Andy Dalton with some nice throws to A.J. Green, Tyler Boyd and Giovani Bernard, the Bengals’ play caller ranked 27th among 32 quarterbacks in the newest NFL1000 Rankings by Bleacher Report. These new rankings take into consideration not only specific traits for each position but also value that position for an overall score of 100.
Dalton got 67 points out of 100 and was poorly graded in the pressure/run threat category, with only nine points, just above Derek Carr and Joe Flacco.
No Cincinnati player was in the top 50 overall, but there were some bright spots like Green, third best wide receiver and only surpassed by Julio Jones and Odell Beckham Jr., or Kevin Zeitler, fifth best guard. Green got 76 points overall and 22 out of 25 in route running, tied for the best. He also led in the hands category with 22 out of 25. Meanwhile Zeitler was pretty consistent and among the best in every rank but the agility category, where he only got 15 out of 20 points.
But, Dalton was not the only one in the bottom of the rankings, he was joined by several others like Russell Bodine and T.J. Johnson at the center position - 25th and 30th out of 31 graded centers respectively, Michael Johnson and Will Clarke at 4-3 defensive end were ranking 49th and 50th out of 57 graded respectively, and George Iloka was the dead last ranked safety. Bodine struggled in agility whereas T.J. Johnson was poor in pass protection with 13 points out of 20. Only the Browns’ center Cameron Erving was worse. Michael Johnson was ranked poorly in snap explosion, with only 11 points out of 20, and Clarke only had 13 points out of 20 in pass rush, tied for the worst at the position.
Any game against the Patriots is tough for a safety, but George Iloka struggled more than he should have. The Bengals safety missed multiple tackles, giving the Patriots opportunities to pick up extra yards.
Cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick wasn’t one of the worst this week, but Bleacher Report points that he regressed against the Patriots, which is something we saw, too:
Kirkpatrick had shown clear signs of improvement until this week, but he struggled badly against the Patriots. He allowed six completions on seven targets, including one touchdown, and was called for a penalty in coverage once. He was credited with two blown coverages, which contributed to New England scoring 35 points Sunday.
Cedric Ogbuehi, despite being benched by the coaching staff after getting beat repeatedly, only ranked 20th out of 32. Domata Peko also out-graded fellow defensive tackle Pat Sims, which many Cincy fans might find surprising.
