Bengals rule A.J. Green out vs. Ravens; Vontaze Burfict still in NFL concussion protocol

The Bengals will not have A.J. Green when they take on the Ravens this Sunday.

During his Wednesday meeting with the media, head coach Marvin Lewis said that Green was not playing in the team’s regular-season finale, despite remaining on the active roster.

Green is still working his way back from a hamstring muscle strain suffered in Week 11. He also is reportedly dealing with a partial tear in a hamstring tendon, which really makes you wonder why the team was ever considering allowing Green to return.

It looks like the team is making the right call to keep their franchise receiver from further injuring himself in a meaningless game, even it proves costly for his assault on the record books. Green will not fall just 36 yards short of joining Randy Moss as the only two players in NFL history to start off their NFL career with six straight seasons with 1,000 receiving yards.

There’s no doubt Green wants to catch that record, not to mention he’s unhappy about not playing, but the team is not going to risk him suffering an injury that lingers into the offseason, which they learned the hard way with Tyler Eifert hurting himself in the Pro Bowl last year.

And with Green out this week, it means younger guys like Tyler Boyd and Cody Core will get more chances to show what they can do.

It also looks like Vontaze Burfict is in danger of missing Sunday due to a concussion he suffered in Week 15. Lewis said that Burfict is still in the NFL concussion protocol, though it’s unclear how far along he is in it.

But with the Bengals bringing up linebackers P.J. Dawson and Trevor Roach from the practice squad over the past week, it certainly appears the team is planning on Burfict sitting out on Sunday.

Again, there’s no point in him playing and risking further injury in a meaningless game, especially when it comes to concussions. He had multiple concussioname during the 2014 season, so there’s already a precedent for Burfict being concussed a second time shortly after his first one.

If Burfict is out Sunday, that means Vincent Rey, Karlos Dansby, Rey Maualuga and Nick Vigil will get the bulk of the linebacker snaps.
