Bengals expected to net 4 compensatory picks in 2017

The Cincinnati Bengals didn't have any compensatory picks in this year's Draft, but next year, they'll have many.

Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

Due to the losses of many key contributors in 2016, the Bengals are expected to acquire four compensatory picks for the 2017 NFL Draft, the maximum allowed for any team.

Compensatory picks are those received at the ends of rounds 3-7 of the NFL Draft due to players lost in free agency the year prior. No one (other than those at the NFL) knows the exact formula used to determine comp picks, but whether or not the player was a starter, whether or not they become a starter and how much they get paid by their new team are all reportedly considered. There's also a deadline for when a free agent must be signed to factor into the comp pick formula. That deadline was May 12, so free agents signed going forward don't factor into the formula.

Over the Cap has released a breakdown of which players are expected to net their former teams compensatory picks and the Bengals are slated to have four due to the losses of Marvin Jones, Mohamed Sanu, Reggie Nelson and Andre Smith. Jones and Sanu are each bringing the Bengals a fourth round pick while Nelson and Smith's departures will bring in sixth round picks.

The Bengals should have 11 Draft picks in 2017, if no trades occur between now and then.

Here's a list of every comp pick the NFL is expected to hand out; this won't be confirmed until about one month prior to the 2017 NFL Draft.
