Bengals vs Lions snap count: Backups at injury-plagued positions lead the way

On Thursday night, the Bengals tested their backups to see how they'd deliver and whether they can be trusted once the regular-season rolls around. Marcus Hardison and Trey Hopkins received the most snaps of anyone on the team against the Lions.

The Bengals beat the Lions in their first preseason game on the road on Thursday night. Despite Jake Fisher leaving the game with an ankle injury (which is now thought to be a sprain), the game was a fairly productive one for the Bengals as the starters looked solid and the backups held up the lead throughout the game.

  • The Bengals seem to really be testing out second year defensive lineman Marcus Hardison who for the second week in a row had the most defensive snaps.
  • Other than Andrew Whitworth and Jake Fisher who got hurt, the offensive line starters played more than the rest of the offensive starters. That's not surprising, but of note.
  • Eric Winston filled in for Fisher once he got hurt and played a large chunk of snaps as the Bengals will now decide if he's a good enough backup to play if both Fisher and Cedric Ogbuehi are unable to start come Week 1 of the regular-season.
  • Trey Hopkins got the most snaps of anyone on the team, playing 59% of the game. Hopkins also has an opportunity to make the roster now with injuries to Ogbuehi and Fisher.
  • Tyler Boyd played the most of any wide receiver and did well in his first time starting.
  • Deshawn Williams and Margus Hunt each played 32 snaps on defense as the Bengals are narrowing in on which lineman make the roster.
