The Bengals are coming off a thrilling win over the Jets, which needed several players to make clutch plays in the game’s closing minutes. One of those was kicker Mike Nugent, who has been nominated for the Castrol Edge Clutch Performer of the Week.
The NFL announced the nominees for this award on Tuesday. Nugent joins Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith, Raiders quarterback David Carr, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, and Lions kicker Matt Prater.
Nugent, now in his 12th NFL season, kicked a 47-yard field goal with 52 seconds remaining as the Bengals came from behind to beat the Jets 23-22 at MetLife Stadium. It was the team’s first victory against the Jets in New York since 1981.
Nugent missed a 52-yard attempt earlier in the quarter that would have given the Bengals a four-point lead with 9:02 remaining. The Jets capitalized by driving 52 yards before settling for a Nick Folk 22-yard field goal, which put them ahead 22-20 with 3:23 remaining.
But quarterback Andy Dalton drove the team to Jets’ 29-yard line to set up Nugent’s game-winning attempt, which he drilled through to give Cincinnati the lead. Josh Shaw would intercept Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick with 40 seconds to go to seal the win.
Nugent also converted both extra-point attempts, as well as hitting a 33-yard field goal in the first quarter and a 21-yarder in the second quarter.
