NFL Week 1 Bengals vs Jets: Thursday practice and injury report

New, comments

The Bengals are getting healthy, but, there was a surprise player yet again on today's injury report. Meanwhile, the Jets look likely to be missing a few players on Sunday.

Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

The Bengals hit the field on Thursday for another practice in preparation for the New York Jets. It was a scorcher in Cincinnati today with temperatures in the high 80s, feeling like the high 90s.

Cody Core felt the effects of that as he was a limited participant, due to that heat. Core has experienced other heat-related issues in mini camp and in the opening days of training camp; he was carted off the field twice already for those issues which were both heat and cramp related. Core should be fine and has returned to practice the day following these types of issues before.

Bengals backup tackle/guard Eric Winston also missed practice, but it was not injury related. That's good news as even though Winston is the fourth best tackle on the Bengals' roster, Jake Fisher and Cedric Ogbuehi are just returning from injuries of their own. Both Ogbuehi and Fisher were full participants again today at practice. That's a good sign that each will be available on Sunday.

Tyler Kroft also looks ready to return after two full days of practice, but, cornerback Darqueze Dennard hasn't practice fully yet. Dennard would be the starting nickel cornerback, if healthy, on Sunday. If he's not healthy, Chris Lewis-Harris and Josh Shaw will see more playing time.

Pat Sims missed yesterday's practice with an achilles injury, which was scary to hear, but, he appears fine as he was a full participant today. That's good news for the Bengals who can certainly use his run stuffing ability against the Jets.

Another change to the injury report came as James Wright was added as a non-participant today. Wright suffered a knee injury during the 2014 season that required two procedures, including microfracture surgery. He was cleared to return to practice prior to the first preseason game and though he had some off days during training camp, he hasn't shown any signs of the knee still being an issue. That changed today as he didn't practice due to his knee. If Wright isn't able to play on Sunday that would be a blow more to the special teams unit than anything else. Wright is expected to play a big role on special teams and having him out on Sunday in addition to Cedric Peerman who's on Injured/Reserve would not be ideal for the Bengals. If Wright is out, expect Core to be among the 46 active players on Sunday.

As for the Jets, their injury report only had one change today as wide receiver Brandon Marshall fully participated after being limited yesterday. It looks like starting linebacker Jordan Jenkins may not play on Sunday after not practicing the last two days.

Tomorrow's injury report will feature designations for the likelihood of each person on the injury report playing. Keep in mind, the probable designation has been done away with so players can be ruled questionable, doubtful or out.
