Why can't this team force turnovers??

While the 2017 season winds down, and the season will likely be remembered as Marvin Lewis last (and it should be), as well as the offensive failures... there have also been glaring defensive problems that need to be addressed going forward....

Most importantly-- forcing turnovers.. no stat is more important in winning and losing a game then the plus/minus of turnovers... when you win the turnover battle you win the majority of time, and vice versa...

Look at these numbers from previous years Bengal teams--

2011-- 22 forced--- 10 INT's, 12 Fumbles

2012- 30 forced--- 14 INT's, 16 Fumbles

2013-- 31 forced-- 20 INT's, 11 Fumbles

2014- 26 Forced--- 20 INT's, 6 Fumbles

2015-- 28 Forced-- 21 INT's, 7 Fumbles

2016-- 20 Forced-- 17 INT's, 3 Fumbles

2017- 11 Forced-- 8 INT's, 3 Fumbles (Thru 13 games)

A couple things jump out of course-- the fumbles recovered is way down from when Zimmer was here, double figures in his last 3 years... to Guenther's years.

Also the total is trending way downward to a pace right now of less than 1 turnover forced a game... by the way that is tied for last in the NFL with Atlanta and Cleveland.... yes the Browns...

You combine the lack of turnovers forced with being 28th out of 32 teams in 3rd down percentage defense, you got a major problem getting off the field....

Also they are 32nd in the NFL in run defense this year.

Now the poor offense this year has played a role in the run defense numbers, in that the Defense is on the field for extra plays, and also playing from behind in the 4th quarter a lot, the opponent can rack up extra rushing yards..

But overall this is awful, and we need major changes.... I would not be sad to see Guenther go, and get a new scheme in here.....

I saw a stat in the Pittsburgh Monday night game, that the Bengals only blitz 19 percent of the time, which is last in the NFL, and mostly they just drop back into a soft zone, keeping safeties deep to avoid the big play.... which the Bengals are good at, because they average near the NFL top at fewest long yardage plays allowed.... but in turn when they don't get pass rush from the Front 4, it is easy pitch and catch for 3rd down conversions... way too soft.

They also continue to struggle to cover TE's year after year in pass coverage....

Somehow this Defense needs to get more aggressive next year, maybe more man to man coverage, maybe a new DC... maybe more effective blitzing...

I think they need to look at upgrading the LB's again... Vontaze is great, but unreliable... also continue to draft some DL..

They do have some young talent at least with WJ3, Lawson, and hopefully Jordan Evans as well...

Hopefully a new Coaching staff can make the changes needed, and the Bengals can get back to forcing turnovers, because year after year, the teams that do wind up in the playoffs.....

They can't ignore upgrading the Defense during the draft..... I know they need help on the OL, etc... but this has been just about as frustrating a year watching from the defensive side of the ball as well.
