In terms of his ability as an athlete, you cannot argue with the Cincinnati Bengals’ decision to draft Joe Mixon in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft. And while third round pick Jordan Willis may not contribute greatly in 2017, he was well worth the 73rd overall pick. In the following video, John Sheeran, Jordan Harris and Dr. Hodgie provide analysis and grades for the Bengals’ picks on day two of the draft:
As John explains, Mixon has everything Marvin Lewis wants in a running back: great size, experience in a zone blocking scheme and out of the shotgun, the ability to run zone and man concepts, and extremely good hands. He is everything Jeremy Hill was supposed to be, but has failed to become, after a stellar rookie year. If you leave Mixon’s off-the-field issues to the side (just for a moment) you’ll see what an exceptional football player he is and why the Bengals looked beyond his past.
Meanwhile, Willis has the physical traits you want in an edge rusher: burst, explosion and fluid hips. However, he may be a few years away from being able to translate that ability to the NFL. Willis was expected by many to be a late Round 1 or early Round 2 pick, but, the Bengals snatched him up in Round 3. Maybe NFL teams saw what draft experts and mock drafters did not. But, that doesn’t mean he’s not going to be a star in Cincinnati in the long-term.
