NFL Draft: Grading Bengals Day 3 draft picks, highlighted by addition of speed

Carl Lawson was a steal, Brandon Wilson and Josh Malone add even more speed, and Jordan Evans will surprise people. Listen to our thoughts on day three of the draft, and our reflections on the team’s overall draft strategy.

Speed. The Bengals lacked it last year, and they clearly added it in this year’s draft. After taking wide receiver John Ross and running back Joe Mixon in the first two rounds, the Bengals continued with the theme of speed by adding linebackers Carl Lawson and Jordan Evans, wide receiver Josh Malone and running back Brandon Wilson on day three.

To hear our analysis of those picks and our overall draft grades, watch the following video:

John Sheeran notes that, while Evans wasn’t invited to the combine, his 40 time, broad jump and vertical jump would have been tops for all off-ball linebackers. Meanwhile, Wilson tested off the charts at his pro day. And Lawson complements Jordan Willis very well. Overall, Bengals management nailed this draft, and has infused the roster with much needed athleticism. But will that be enough? Dr. Hodgie is concerned Marvin Lewis and company are looking for home runs, which might be a sign of desperation.
