Bengals Fan Rate Your Hate, Part 6: NFC South

We take another trip down south for the second NFC leg of our Rate Your Hate series.

We started off the NFC part of our Rate Your Hate series by heading to see Vikings head coach and former Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer and the rest of the NFC North. Today, we’re taking a trip down south to a division filled with franchise quarterbacks as well as Super Bowl runner ups. The NFC South boasts some of the most prolific offenses in the NFL, but the division hasn’t seen a Super Bowl champion since the heartwarming Saints championship win follow Hurricane Katrina. With the wide receiver other than Bengals’ star A.J. Green who was selected in the top 10 picks of the 2011 NFL Draft (Julio Jones), along with charismatic quarterbacks like Cam Newton and Jameis Winston, there could be many points of contention for Bengals fans. Let’s get down to business in deciding which NFC South team Bengals fans hate most.

Atlanta Falcons

Fresh off of a Super Bowl berth, the Falcons offense was flying high as Matt Ryan took home the 2016 season’s MVP award. He of course had some big help, like Pro Bowl wide receiver Julio Jones and former Bengals receiver Mohamed Sanu. That said, even the most prolific offense in the league couldn’t fend off Tom Brady and the Patriots, as the Dirty Birds would go on to give up the largest lead in the history of the Super Bowl. That has to sting, probably not as much as giving up a legendary drive at the end of the fourth quarter in Super Bowl XXIII (I’m sorry for bringing it up), but it stings nonetheless. The Bengals have won three of the last four meetings against the Falcons, and lead the all time series 8-5, so in a head-to-head competition it looks like Cincinnati comes out on top.

Carolina Panthers

Another franchise that recently lost a Super Bowl, Carolina didn’t exactly have a great year to follow it up. Newton looked about as lost in 2016 as he was scared to jump on the football during Super Bowl 50. Fortunately for Carolina, they have a nice core to build around on offense and former St. Xavier graduate Luke Kuechly holds down the defense. Against the Bengals, the Panthers have things all evened up at 2-2-1 throughout their history. In recent memory I’m sure Bengals fans can remember the 2014 tie, because no one ever enjoys tying a game in football. I feel like if any Bengals fans are going to choose the Panthers for this poll, it’s likely just going to be because they just don’t like Newton...Or that tie.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Ever since the Bucs drafted Jameis Winston it seems they’ve been a team on the brink of turning the corner; they just haven’t been able to get there quite yet. They’ve certainly got the talent to do it. The Buccaneers and their fans should be looking for some improvement this year with Dirk Koetter now in his second year as head coach. The team also has a loaded offense featuring Doug Martin, DeSean Jackson, Mike Evans and rookie tight end O.J. Howard. Against the Bengals, Tampa has had their fair share of success. The Bengals did beat the Bucs 14-13 back in 2014, but until then the Bengals hadn’t beaten them since 1989! That’s six straight wins for the Buccaneers for those of you doing the math at home (note: there is no math to be done, and I would never ask someone to do math in their home. That’s just boring.). If there is any reason why Bengals fans would need a reason to hate the Bucs, allow me to give you one: those disgusting old creamsicle-orange uniforms. This may be a real reach, but petty reasons to hate a team are what makes the NFL great.

William Howard

New Orleans Saints

Last, but certainly not least is the always dependable Drew Brees and his New Orleans Saints. Brees has lately been a one man army for the Saints, but that better be the case when you’re as big of a cap hit on your team as Brees is. I believe I saw a Craigslist job posting for defensive football players, so I think New Orleans is finally trying to build a defense. That said, I won’t be too hard on them because they had to endure the storm that was Rob Ryan during his stint as coordinator not all that long ago. The Bengals have won four of their last five against the Saints and lead the all time series 7-6. I really don’t have all that much to say about hating the Saints. They’re not really all that exciting of a franchise right now, the Bengals have only played them twice in this decade, and don’t get to see them this season. I’m extremely indifferent when it comes to New Orleans. Except for food that is. New Orleans, you’ve got yourself some tasty grub.

Anyway, time to vote! Which NFC South team do you hate the most?
