The Cincinnati Bengals’ offense has a world of potential in 2017.
The Bengals’ offense was scary when it had a healthy A.J. Green and Tyler Eifert, something that rarely occurred in 2016. Green missed six games due to a hamstring injury, while Eifert missed eight contests due to back and ankle issues.
In the three games for which Cincinnati had Eifert and Green playing together for the majority of the game (Cleveland, Washington and New York Giants), the offense scored an average of 26 points, up nearly a full touchdown from the season average of 20.3 points per game.
Not only do the Bengals figure to have both back this coming season, but they’ve also added first-round receiver John Ross. The No. 9 overall pick in this year’s draft is a game-breaker who can thrive in any part of the field, much like his counterpart in Green.
NFL Network analyst and former NFL receiver Nate Burleson is very high on the Green-Ross tandem. Burleson went as far as to call them the best wide receiver tandem in the NFL in 2017 on an episode of Good Morning Football.
That’s extremely high and bold praise for a tandem that has yet to play a regular-season snap together. Then again, any tandem that has Green as a part of it is automatically going to be a contender for the best NFL receiver duo.
The All-Pro is easily one of the two or three best receivers in the game, so adding another first-round-caliber receiver next to him could spell disaster for opposing defenses.
And it will help that they have Eifert wreaking havoc in the middle of the field and keeping safeties from cheating over to Green or Ross’ side. That means the Ross-Green tandem could see fewer double-teams than most, if not every receiver duo in the NFL this season. The addition of Joe Mixon who can both run and catch with efficiency only adds to the dynamic and how opposing defenses will need to gameplan against the Bengals.
Let’s just hope that all of them can actually stay on the field this season. There’s no question the offense has the talent to help make this one of the NFL’s better offenses. It’s just a matter of them all staying on the field enough to do so.
The other receiver pairings mentioned in the segment were the Raiders' duo of Michael Crabtree and Amari Cooper as Kay Adams' choice to be the top tandem; the Falcons' duo of Julio Jones and former Bengals receiver Mohamed Sanu as Peter Schrager choice; and the Giants' tandem of Brandon Marshall and Odell Beckham Jr., selected by Kyle Brandt.
