Bengals training camp Day 2: Highlights, videos and pictures

An inside look at the Bengals from the training camp practice fields.

The Cincinnati Bengals had a productive second day of training camp with 2,100 fans in attendance at the practice fields just west of Paul Brown Stadium.

The pads come on tomorrow, but today there were many one-on-one, seven-on-seven and 11-on-11 drills that mostly showcased the offense. A.J. Green, Cody Core and Joe Mixon all made great plays during the day while John Ross impressed with his speed on one-on-one drills, the only ones in which he’s currently participating.

Take takeaways from Saturday:

  • A.J. Green looked great, as per usual.
  • John Ross impressed with his speed.
  • Dre Kirkpatrick had a pick-six on Andy Dalton.
  • Adam Jones got beat a few times, though it’s nothing to worry about... yet.
  • William Jackson had his second interception of training camp.
  • Joe Mixon is already a fan favorite and had a touchdown on Saturday.
  • Carl Lawson got a lot of work and looked good in the process. He practiced at both defensive end and linebacker.

Michael Johnson and Wallace Gilberry received a veteran’s rest day on Day 2 of Bengals training camp, though both were in attendance and doing some light work on the sidelines.

After not doing kick returns on Day 1, Alex Erickson was doing kick returns on Day 2 to open up the day. John Ross and Joe Mixon were also participating in kick returns.

Trey Hopkins took some reps with the first team offense at right guard as the Bengals mixed things up on Saturday.

A look at some side receiver action:

Ross is not going to be a full participant for at least a few more practices, but it’s still great that he’s on the field and doing work.

A look at warmups:

Jake Kumerow, who injured his ankle on Friday, did not participate in Saturday’s practice.

Wide receiver work:

Ross in action:

And some Josh Malone, too.

And, more wide receiver work.

A.J. Green, ladies and gentlemen:

Core putting in work:

Some nice work from Vincent Rey:

Go Gio, go!

Mixon had a touchdown!

Lawson was getting some work at defensive end today with Johnson sidelined.

This is an interesting development... Anticipated starting right guard Andre Smith has been getting reps as the only position he’s ever played at the NFL level, right tackle. But, it was with the second team offense. It would actually make a lot of sense for Smith to serve as a backup tackle if he’s beaten out for the starting right guard job.

Jake Fisher was holding down the position with the first team group.

Malone vs Dre Kirkpatrick:

This is great:

Core scored a touchdown while matched up against Adam Jones:

Brandon LaFell with the catch and run, while lined up against William Jackson.

Saturday’s second team interior offensive line was Christian Westerman at left guard, T.J. Johnson at center and Alex Redmond at right guard.

More from Green:

The kicking competition got going today with only two of the three kickers kicking. The Bengals did the same during OTAs and minicamp. Jonathan Brown missed from 30-yards out, which is not a great look for the first year kicker. Meanwhile, Randy Bullock made his three kicks.

A look at some running back drills:

Geno Atkins getting into the backfield, as per usual:

Dre Kirkpatrick had a pick six on Andy Dalton toward the end of the day.

William Jackson also had an interception on AJ McCarron, after picking off Dalton on Friday.

Lawson practiced both at defensive end and linebacker on Saturday.

The future? It looks like Lawson got a lot of play with the first team.

As always, the day ended with autographs.
