Preseason football may not measure up to what we’ll see in the regular season, but the third preseason game is as close as it gets.
This is typically when teams play their starters for an entire half, if not longer. This gives us the best chance to gauge just how good (or bad) NFL teams are. That will be the case this Sunday when the Bengals face Washington.
Sunday is expected to see the debut of Bengals first round rookie wide receiver John Ross. The ninth-overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft has yet to see preseason action and he’s hoping to have a major role in this offense, not to mention be an X-factor in an offense that has the potential to carry Cincinnati back to the playoffs.
In addition to Sunday’s game being that all-important dress rehearsal, it will tell us a lot about the 2017 Bengals. They’re coming off a disastrous performance at the hands of the Chiefs, who some experts consider a top-10 team this season. Getting beat by a team like that happens (especially with no gameplan in the preseason), but the Bengals must respond and have a good showing in Washington get that bad taste out of their mouths.
This also serves as a good barometer for how good the Bengals are since Washington is coming off consecutive winning seasons and should be in the playoff mix this season. The Bengals are hoping to get back into the postseason, so how well they play at Washington could indicate how close that is to becoming a reality.
Here is everything you'll need to watch and follow these two teams square off in Week 3 of the preseason.
